Installing the Trunk PPF Protector

  1. Prepare the soap solution supplied in the kit by adding water. This is your slip solution.
  2. Clean the painted lip at the rear of the trunk opening — the area that gets knocked when you load and unload. Wipe it thoroughly with the soap solution.
  3. Spray the soap solution generously over the whole area of the bumper you are covering.
  4. Spray your hands and fingers, and the squeegee, with the soap solution as well. Keep your fingers wet throughout the install — touching the adhesive side with dry fingers affects long-term adhesion.
  5. Unroll the PPF and peel off the backing, spraying the adhesive side with soap solution as you go. The piece is long, so handle it carefully and keep it from folding onto itself — once the film sticks to itself it is ruined.
  6. Lay the film roughly in place on the bumper. Find the small nub on the edge of the film — this is the center marker — and line it up with the trunk strike latch.
  7. Slide the film into position. If it will not slide, add more soap solution.
  8. Set the bottom edge of the film along the fold or crease in the bumper. Sit the edge of the film on that crease or slightly above it — never below. Film that wraps past the radius with nothing underneath it will lift over time.
  9. At the top, cover the painted edge. You do not need to tuck the film fully underneath the weather stripping.
  10. Give the film a light pull to shape it, then take the soft side of the squeegee and work gently at first to push out the bulk of the liquid and hold the film in place.
  11. Go over it again with more pressure to release more trapped liquid. The film should no longer move on its own, but will still slide if you need to adjust it.
  12. Use your fingertips to tuck the top edge into the crease along the top. Work along the crease steadily — this part resists until the slip solution is worked out from underneath.
  13. Spray again and squeegee over the whole piece, working all remaining liquid and air out to the ends. Anything trapped under the film will still be visible once it dries.
  14. Wipe the panel down and check the film over. It should be completely smooth when finished.

Tips

  • Install in temperate conditions, between 60°F and 80°F (16°C and 27°C).
  • Install indoors if you can. PPF blows around outside, and if it sticks to itself the piece is finished.
  • In cooler conditions the film is less tacky, so be more diligent about squeegeeing the fluid out of the top edge before it will stay down.
